Camping At Porteau Cove Proving Park In British Columbia
If your plans include camping along British Columbia’s scenic Sea to Sky Highway on Canada’s west coast, then you must check out Porteau Cove Provincial Park.
A beautiful ocean front park on the shores of Howe Sound less than one hours drive or approximately 40 kilometers from downtown Vancouver BC.
This park is less than 2 hours from my home and has always been a favorite of ours for many years. As a matter of fact, I am writing this article sitting in our recreational vehicle while we are enjoying camping at Porteau.
The seas are calm, the sun is setting, neighbors are enjoying their campfires, and it has been another lovely day camping at this beautiful park.
Porteau Cove Provincial Park And Marine Park
Attached to Porteau campground is also a lovely day area with picnic tables and a very popular Marine Protected Park designed specifically for 🤿 Scuba Divers. In fact, this is where I learned how to scuba dive and performed one of my certification dives back in the mid 1970’s!
Today, it’s a protected area where no fishing or shelling of any kind is allowed in the parks boundaries. There are man made reefs and sunken vessels underwater for divers to enjoy. There are also convenient concrete steps leading into the water, making shore diving a pleasure.
If that isn’t enough for you, the park has also installed 🚿 indoor and outdoor showers to rinse you and your equipment off after your dive!
The day area also has a boat launch and a pier to walk on and enjoy the spectacular views of Howe Sound.
A perfect combination of diving and camping in one location!
Porteau Cove Campground Facilities
The campground is open year round and situated in a beautiful treed setting along the east shores of Howe Sound. This Provincial Park offers 44 spacious, powered sites with 30 amp service with some sites that will fit even the largest of Class A motor homes.
As well and which is definitely unique for this park, is the segregated walk in only water front tent sites.
There are 16 assigned 🚌 tent sites for you to select from. You have a designated parking stall and walk in a very short distance to your lovely tent sites.
These are lovely sites on the edge of the beach, complete with power as well!
This park has very clean washroom facilities with flush toilets, sinks with even hand soap and dryers, as well as free shower facilities for campers. Additional outhouse facilities have been added, particularly convenient for those in the tenting area.
The park staff also man a small convenience store at the main gate house and do offer firewood for sale at a very reasonable price, as well as propane, using the tank exchange program.
All in all, a great place to camp or picnic when traveling up or down the Sea to Sky highway. The campground and day use area are well maintained continually throughout the day, with staff keeping the grounds and washroom facilities in immaculate condition.
Now you know why it has always been a favorite of ours for many years!
Beware:
I strongly suggest reserving a campsite well in advance if you can, Especially during the peak season running from June thru September inclusive.
This is a very popular campground with limited spaces as you can see, so to avoid disappointment, I strongly advise advance reservations if you can. I have listed the BC Parks Reservations website for your convenience below.
